The Fourth of July is a favorite summer holiday for patriotic Americans, complete with grilled burgers, poolside parties, fireworks, and memories with family and friends. But as much fun as the day brings, the holiday also presents an increased risk of fire and property damage.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that more fires are reported on the Fourth of July than on any other day of the year. Fireworks alone cause over 31,000 fires each year, with many of them damaging homes, vehicles, and outdoor property structures.

At All Pride Environmental, we know just how quickly a celebration can go sideways when fire safety isn’t top of mind. We’re your experts in fire damage restoration, smoke odor removal, and emergency cleanup, and we’re sharing a few essential safety tips to help you enjoy your Independence Day with peace of mind.

Safety Tips to Keep Your Holiday Happy

1. Set It Off With Caution (Or Leave It to the Pros)

Fireworks are festive but also dangerous. A single spark can ignite dry grass, your deck, or even the rooftop. If you’re planning a backyard fireworks show, follow these tips.

  • Only use legal fireworks in your area.
  • Light them far from buildings, vehicles, and flammable materials.
  • Keep a hose or bucket of water nearby for emergencies.
  • Soak spent fireworks before throwing them away.
  • Never let children handle fireworks (sparklers included).

Better yet, attend a community fireworks show. You’ll get all the sparkle without the risk to your property.

2. Grill Safely

Backyard grilling is a 4th of July staple, but it’s also one of the leading causes of outdoor fires in summer. Whether you're cooking with gas or charcoal, make sure you do the following.

  • Set your grill up at least 10 feet away from your home, overhangs, or fences.
  • Clean grease traps and grill grates before and after use to avoid flare-ups.
  • Never leave a grill unattended while in use.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby (and make sure it works!).
  • Watch for signs of gas leaks (if you smell gas or hear hissing, turn it off immediately).

Being vigilant while you grill helps ensure your cookout doesn’t turn into a call for emergency services.

3. Think Twice About Open Flames

Decorative candles, torches, and fire pits may add to the atmosphere, but they also pose serious fire risks, especially if the wind picks up or if decorations catch flame.

  • Opt for battery-powered LED candles instead.
  • If using real flames, place them on sturdy, nonflammable surfaces.
  • Keep open flames away from walkways, dry foliage, or fabric decorations.
  • Extinguish all flames completely before going inside or heading to bed.

4. Check Electrical Safety Before the Party Starts

Festive lights and outdoor sound systems can enhance your July 4th bash, but overloading circuits or using damaged cords can lead to fires or shocks.

  • Inspect all extension cords and plugs for fraying or damage.
  • Don’t overload outlets or run cords under rugs or furniture.
  • Avoid daisy-chaining multiple cords together.
  • Use weather-rated outdoor cords for anything outside.
  • Keep cords away from water sources like sprinklers, pools, or drink stations.

5. Florida Heat + Dry Conditions = Elevated Risk

In North Central Florida, high summer temps and periods of dry weather make certain materials like mulch, grass, and even outdoor furniture more combustible. Keep your landscaping hydrated, dispose of trash properly, and never leave combustible materials near fire sources.

What If Something Goes Wrong?

Even with the best safety practices, accidents can still happen. If you exprience smoke, fire, or water damage due to a July Fourth mishap at your Florida property:

  • Call 911 immediately if anyone is in danger or if the fire hasn’t been fully extinguished.
  • Once it’s safe, contact the professionals at All Pride.
  • We respond quickly to assess damage, board up exposed areas, and begin fire restoration.

From smoke odor removal and soot cleanup to structural drying and damage mitigation, our team is here to restore your property safely and efficiently.

Enjoy the 4th Without the Fire Risk

This Independence Day, stay safe while celebrating our freedoms. A few extra precautions can protect your loved ones—and your property.
